High School Baseball
from Coach Schneider
Varsity Re-cap:
While Spring Break looked a little different for LSA baseball this year, the Pioneer varsity squad made the most of their “stay-cation” breaking out the brooms in a Thursday afternoon double-header sweep of the Concordia Lutheran Crusaders. The Pioneers received a gem of a game on the mound from starter Luke Harrison and solid bullpen relief from Perry Brown in holding the Crusaders to 2 runs on 3 hits. Harrison finished the game with 9 strikeouts, while Brown picked up the win. Lutheran South would piece together 6 hits in game 1 with four of them coming courtesy of Harrison and Tyler Helpenstill each with two apiece. Christian Melillo (1) and Deundre Jones (2) would provide the RBI power for the Pioneers with Jones driving in the winning run in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 7th giving the Pioneers a 3-2 win. Game 2 would see the Pioneers fall behind 3-0 over the first two innings of play before igniting some offensive fireworks starting in the 3rd inning. Tyler Ehlinger would lead off with a single and steal second base before Luke Harrison would park a baseball off the right field foul pole for a two-run homerun, his first of the season. Deundre Jones followed with a walk and two stolen bases before scoring on a Christian Melillo sacrifice fly to left field. The Pioneers continued the scoring onslaught in the 5th and 6th innings. In the 5th, it was once again Ehlinger leading off the inning with a big hit, doubling down the left-field line. He would advance to third on a single from Easton Brenner before eventually scoring on a Harrison safety squeeze. Deundre Jones would finish the scoring in the inning driving a two-run homerun to right centerfield to end the frame. In the 6th, the Pioneers would pick up singles from Ehlinger, Harrison, and Tyler Helpenstill before a big-fly homerun from pitcher Nelson Klein. Altogether, the Pioneers would score 12 runs in the contest finishing with three homeruns in a 12-3, game 2 victory. Deundre Jones and Nelson Klein provided the firepower on the mound for LSA with Klein picking up his third win of the season.

Prior to spring break, the Pioneers capped off a 2-0 week with district wins over Frassati Catholic (15-1 & 10-0). The winning streak puts the Pioneers season record at 12-3-1, 4-0 in district play. LSA is back in action Tuesday night at home with a 6:00 PM first pitch against SPC front-runner The Kinkaid School.

LSA would then fall to Clear Creek 6-8 and Dickinson 2-8 over the final two games.
